Accusoft Delivers Warp Fix for Better Data Capture from Digital Photos

PICTools Document now corrects perspective warp for superior preprocessing of smartphone captures

TAMPA, Fla. – February 25, 2015 – Accusoft today announces the addition of perspective warp correction to PICTools Document, one of four products in the PICTools family of software development kits (SDKs) for adding superior image/document viewing, editing, compression, enhancement and processing functions to applications.

Document photos taken with digital cameras and smartphones often are taken at an angle, distorting characters and bending lines and borders of rectangular images such as checks, business cards, and paper forms. The warped documents are virtually useless to popular applications for extracting data from the image, such as optical character recognition (OCR). Tests show OCR operations make as many as eight times as many errors processing a warped image as capturing data from a properly aligned one.

The perspective warp correction function in the PICTools Document SDK enables the development of applications that can adjust the image to correct for an off-angle shot. The corrected image can then be far more accurately read by check deposit, business card capture, forms processing, and other applications. Images of quadrilateral objects are corrected to a true rectangle for easy cropping away of any background area behind the object and attractive embedding in documents and web pages.

The availability of perspective warp correction in PICTools Document has the potential to usher in a new generation of more accurate, more reliable applications for extracting data from smartphone photos, including better barcode readers, fingerprint scanners and even smartphone-based forms processing apps for mobile real estate, transportation, insurance and other applications.

PICTools Document delivers powerful server-based image cleanup functions to create superior document imaging, records management, and forms processing applications. Other recent enhancements include inverse text correction improvements, an improved binarization algorithm, and a new dot-shading sub-opcode. Together these improvements fine-tune the power of PICTools Document to perform precise, accurate cleanup and correction of bitonal document images for processing and archival.

Besides PICTools Document, the PICTools family includes PICTools Photo for enriching photo management software, online photo services, kiosk applications, and more; PICTools Medical for enhancing both still image and video medical imaging applications; and PICTools Fingerprint for building fast, accurate fingerprint-scan security into any application.
